IRVING, Texas--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Vizient, Inc. today announced it has presented on the role of U.S. group purchasing organizations in the radiopharmaceutical supply chain at the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) Nuclear Energy Agency’s (NEA) 1st Meeting of the 4th Mandate of the High-level Group on the Security of Supply of Medical Radioisotopes (HLG-MR).
The NEA established the HLG-MR in 2009 to examine the underlying reasons for the global supply shortage of non-HEU molybdenum-99 (99Mo) and technetium-99m (99mTc) necessary for the medical grade isotopes used in radiopharmaceuticals. The fourth mandate of the HLG-MR will allow for an extension of its work in the field of ensuring the security of supply of medical radioisotopes. The group meets twice annually to share information and to discuss ongoing policy issues.
Vizient, the largest member-owned health care company in the country serving academic medical centers, acute and non-acute community health care providers, and pediatric facilities, was invited to present at the HLG-MR meeting.
“Radiopharmaceuticals are critical to the diagnosis of various disease states and have a complex and fragile supply chain. It was an honor to provide the HLG-MR Vizient’s perspective on securing the supply of medical radioisotopes, barriers to entry in implementing non-HEU Mo-99 into the healthcare supply chain as well as how we can help members address increasing cost,” said Leah Gannon, MBA, radiopharmaceutical senior portfolio executive for Vizient and presenter at the meeting.
Gannon’s presentation provided insight into group purchasing organizations in the healthcare supply chain and how Vizient works to support the security of supply and non-proliferation of HEU use in the production of radiopharmaceuticals. Vizient’s commitment to members in this area includes providing assistance with the development of radiopharmaceutical programs, education on key medical imaging topics, and using institutional data to drive appropriate change in practice.
