IRVING, Texas--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Vizient, Inc. applauds the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) for working with health care industry stakeholders to take steps to alleviate certain drug shortages facing the nation’s acute care providers.
While combating opioid abuse and addiction remains a top national priority, it’s important to note that hospitals and other healthcare providers are currently experiencing critical shortages of a number of injectable narcotics that are an essential element of treatment for post-surgical and medical pain management. It’s critical that a balance is struck to ensure guardrails help prevent prescription opioid abuse, but also that necessary injectable medicines remain accessible for the acute care setting.
Through the DEA’s recent efforts, Vizient is hopeful that injectable opioid medications that have been experiencing severe shortages will now be more readily available for acute care providers to use for responsible patient care.
Finding ways to mitigate the impact of drug shortages has been a focus of Vizient for years, and we’ve long been vocal proponents and advocates of increasing competition among generic drug manufacturers to improve availability and lower prices. Vizient has multiple programs and strategies in place that are dedicated solely to helping the members we serve access the necessary pharmaceuticals they need. And we work collaboratively with others across the industry to find innovative solutions.
Vizient is the nation’s largest health care performance improvement company serving a diverse membership that includes academic medical centers, pediatric facilities, community hospitals, integrated health care delivery networks and non-acute health care providers.
