Just over a year ago, hospitals across the country watched anxiously to learn about the novel coronavirus from a handful of cases in Washington state. As the number of COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations expanded across the nation, hospitals grappled with figuring out how to treat the virus, keep staff and patients safe and prepare for local surges. To help members navigate the many unknowns surrounding the virus, Vizient leveraged the rich data contained in its Clinical Data Base (CDB), Operational Data Base (ODB) and Clinical Practice Solutions Center (CPSC) to produce a series of data insights briefs that identify the impact of COVID-19 on patients and care across the nation.
While COVID-19 accelerated the adoption of emerging digital technologies, it also made clear the need to transform health care delivery to ensure patients get the right care, when and where they need it and who better to solve for that than healthcare providers themselves. In response to these market dynamics, Vizient launched its Member-Backed Ventures offering earlier this year for health care executives who want to learn more about health care provider startups and are interested in partnering, investing or co-developing them with other health systems.

The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines a community, in part, as “a body of persons of common and especially professional interests scattered through a larger society.” The rapidly growing Vizient Community, which celebrates its second-year anniversary in April 2021, fits that description and provides a robust array of benefits to the community’s participants. Housed on a secure, online platform, the Vizient Community is a trusted collaboration hub that enables members to ask questions of peers across the country, share information, ask for (and make) recommendations, collaborate on projects, sign up for meetings, download newsletters and other member content, and register for webinars tailored to their specific interests.
We have seen the significant effects of COVID-19 on our country’s most vulnerable populations, amplifying existing health disparities. We have also seen hospitals and health systems continue and expand their efforts to address social determinants of health. This work has taken on new meaning during the pandemic and will continue to become even more important. Not every organization is equipped to lead social determinants of health work, but every organization has an important role to play. And it starts with finding your fit.
